Social networking over laptops at the workplace increased by 14 per cent in Germany, while it jumped by 10 per cent in the US.

In 2010, 29 per cent of laptop users versus 18 per cent of desktop users surveyed said they frequented these sites at work.

For all the countries surveyed this year, laptop users who can connect to the Internet outside of the company network are more likely to share confidential information via instant messenger, web mail and social media applications than those who are always connected to a company’s network.

The percentage of employees visiting social networking sites at the workplace globally rose to 24 per cent this year from just 18 per cent in 2008, even as more companies are restricting access to such websites, a survey said.

According to a survey by global Internet content security provider Trend Micro, employees are finding ways around security roadblocks to make social networking an integral part of office-life around the world.

The largest increase in social networking over corporate Internet connections during the last two years was among employees in Germany, which saw a more than 10 per cent jump, and the UK, with a six per cent rise.

The survey also found that laptop users are much more likely than desktop users to visit social networking sites.

Globally, social networking usage via laptops went up by eight per cent from 2008 to 2010, the report stated.

Rumour has it that Google might launch its own social networking site ‘Google Me’.

According to The Telegraph, Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg, tweeted, “Ok, umm, huge rumour: Google to launch Facebook competitor very soon “Google Me,” very credible source” on June 28.

Google has reportedly been researching social networking patterns in order to create one of its own.

TechCrunch’s tip-off leaked that the study is to take place at Google’s Dublin office and will take 60 minutes with pollsters receiving 60 Euros per survey.

The questions are believed to centre on how social networking affects people’s lives both off and online.

TechCrunch’s Leena Rao said, “While the survey doesn’t confirm the existence of ‘Google Me’, it certainly is another piece of evidence pointing in that direction.”

1. Facebook: 54.90%. Are we really surprised to see that Facebook is the Numero Uno social website? Probably not. With over 500 million members and still growing by leaps and bounds, Facebook is incredibly popular. Make no mistake about it—Facebook appeals to younger members, but there is also a large demographic of older members, as well.

3. MySpace: 11.9%. This may come as something of a surprise to people who thought that the popularity of MySpace was waning. There is also an International version of MySpace, as well as a Latino version.

4. Twitter: 1.07%. Really? Can this be true? One would think that considering the tremendous popularity of tweeting and Twitter, it would have commanded a heftier percentage of the market share, but apparently not. Who knew?

5. Tagged: 1.01%. This one bills itself as being all about social discovery, meeting new people and staying in touch with people you already know.

6. Yahoo! Answers: 0.91%. You might no think of this as a social community, but it is certainly a community with a large member base. The benefit here to someone wanting to use this site for social media marketing is that by answering questions asked by other members, you can achieve varying levels of expertise until you are deemed an expert in a category, which could be helpful in establishing yourself as an authority in your niche.

7. Yahoo! Profiles: 0.62%. Basically a place to post your Yahoo profile and share it with other Yahoo members.

8. MyYearbook: 0.61%. This one does seem to be geared more toward a youthful audience, and might be worth your while for marketing if this age group is your targeted demographic.

9. Windows Live Home: 0.46%. Okay, this one is more or less a place to bring Windows Live services together, all in one place.

10. MocoSpace: 0.34%. Again, seems to be mostly for a young age group. It probably gains much appeal by being accessible on mobile devices.

Facebook continues to face criticism over privacy protections at its social networking website.

Privacy and civil liberties groups on Wednesday urged Facebook to address issues they say violate the privacy of the site's more than 400 million users.

In an open letter to Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, the groups applauded steps the company has taken to make it easier for users to change privacy settings. But it asked for additional measures, such as allowing users to control all of the information they share on Facebook and making it easier to export their data and easier to quit Facebook. It also asked for Facebook to make the instant personalization pilot program that shares users' publicly available data with select partner sites an “opt-in” feature.

The letter was signed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Center for Digital Democracy and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

“Facebook continues to push its users into more and more public sharing — sharing that it's not at all clear members want or fully understand,” said Kevin Bankston, senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “We're calling on Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg to respect their members and give them the information and the tools they need for true control.”

Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said the social network was responding to the concerns.

“We plan to continue to make control easy and effective for all the people who use our service and will continue to engage these groups and others in a constructive dialogue about these important issues,” he said in an e-mailed statement.

He also included a detailed response to each of the issues raised by the privacy groups. And he pointed out that Facebook plans to roll out a data permission program in the coming weeks to address remaining concerns.

The letter from advocacy groups arrived in Zuckerberg's in box as attention to the privacy imbroglio seemed to be waning.

Yahoo users can now view their Facebook News Feed via their Yahoo home page, Yahoo Mail, and other Yahoo sites, the company said. Additionally, content created on Yahoo sites, including Yahoo News, Sports, Movies and the photo-site Flickr, can be shared with friends on Facebook.

Ethan Beard, director of Facebook Developer Network, was quoted in the Yahoo statement saying that, “by integrating with Facebook on a global scale, Yahoo is building upon an already valuable brand to give people easy ways to share the content they enjoy on Yahoo! with their friends on Facebook.”

Yahoo offered more details of the way people can connect with Facebook sites on its blog, but Facebook remained mum on the issue early Monday, without any details in its press center, blog or twitter feed. The most recent communications on these pages largely addressed privacy concerns.

Yahoo and Facebook first announced a plan to integrate services much more closely last December. At the time, Yahoo users in the U.S. were able to call up their Facebook activity streams and post status updates from the Yahoo home page, as well as use buttons to share certain Yahoo content. The companies promised much more this year via the use of Facebook’s Connect technology across Yahoo sites.
