According to Marketing Charts and data from Hitwise, these were the top 10 social networking websites and forums during the month of May, 2010.

1. Facebook: 54.90%. Are we really surprised to see that Facebook is the Numero Uno social website? Probably not. With over 500 million members and still growing by leaps and bounds, Facebook is incredibly popular. Make no mistake about it—Facebook appeals to younger members, but there is also a large demographic of older members, as well.

2. YouTube: 16.02%. Another hugely popular site, especially since online video viewing is HOT. Nowhere close to Facebook’s market share, but definitely nothing to sneeze at in terms of a good place for social media marketing.

3. MySpace: 11.9%. This may come as something of a surprise to people who thought that the popularity of MySpace was waning. There is also an International version of MySpace, as well as a Latino version.

4. Twitter: 1.07%. Really? Can this be true? One would think that considering the tremendous popularity of tweeting and Twitter, it would have commanded a heftier percentage of the market share, but apparently not. Who knew?

5. Tagged: 1.01%. This one bills itself as being all about social discovery, meeting new people and staying in touch with people you already know.

6. Yahoo! Answers: 0.91%. You might no think of this as a social community, but it is certainly a community with a large member base. 1) Be local, even when you're not: When setting up Google Voice, you have the option of selecting a phone number with the area code of your choice. So what's the small business benefit? Let's say you run a catering service that's based in San Jose, CA (408 area code), and you'd like to attract customers in nearby San Francisco (415 area code). By choosing a 415 number and making it the public contact number for your business–at least in your San Francisco-based ads, anyway–you may lure more customers from SF. (I'm assuming you'd also have a 408 number for your San Jose clientele.) Some industries benefit from a local presence.

2) Phone number for life: If your business moves (perhaps to cheaper digs outside the city), your Google Voice number stays with you. And if you switch to a new office phone provider or wireless carrier, your customers won't lose your number. Since you can configure your Google Voice number to ring one of more other phones, such as a work, home, or cell number, it's less likely that you'll miss important business calls too.

3) Easy voice conferencing: Nobody likes to enter a lengthy pass code and other digit strings to enter a conference call. Google Voice has a simpler approach: Participants ring your Google Voice number; as each call comes in, you follow the prompts to connect them to the conference.

4) Cheap international calls: Have a lot of overseas customers? Google Voice rates are dirt cheap–2 cents per minute to China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, the UK, and a bunch of other places. International calling is easiest on Android phones with the Google Voice app installed: Simply use your phone's native dialer to call abroad. Otherwise, the process is a bit clunky. Call screening is a good way to avoid, well, people you'd rather not talk to at the moment (e.g., bill collectors or irate customers).

The service, which started life out as GrandCentral, acts as a unified phone number. It can be used to make free calls to the U.S. and Canada, to send free text messages and more. Its voicemail system can even be.

Now, after more than fifteen months of testing with invite-only accounts, Google Voice is ready for the masses.

As great as the service is, it hasn’t existed without controversy. Last summer, Apple was criticized when the company barred the Google Voice iPhone app from its App Store. The battle over Google Voice was arguably the first shot in the current Apple-Google war.

And earlier today, Business Week reported that Frontier Communications is suing Google over alleged patent violations within the Google Voice service.

For many users however, Google Voice is a wonderful solution to the increasingly complex web of communication profiles. Instead of having to try to maintain separate phone numbers, users can just have one central number forwarded to different devices based on time of day or location.

Dell’s Amit Midha, president for greater China and South Asia, said the PC company “wants to be one of the leaders” when it comes to adopting new technologies like Google’s Android and Chrome operating systems, according to Reuters on Monday. Dell’s interest in Android is old news, but it has to this point only played around with Chrome OS, stopping short of announcing plans to release a product based on the software.

Midha didn’t exactly announce such plans with his comments, of course, but his words are the strongest suggestion yet that Dell would like to build a Chrome OS Netbook. The company is not listed among the official Chrome OS supporters on Google’s Chrome OS pages, which include Dell competitors such as Acer, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba.

Google has said Chrome OS Netbooks are supposed to be out by the end of the year. The company has also said it plans to use the devices internally, and it will be interesting to see which hardware vendor gets the Google contract.

Millions of web users rely on PDF files every day to consume a wide variety of text and media content. To enable this, a number of plug-ins exist today which allow users to open PDF files inside their browsers.

As we’ve previously mentioned, the traditional browser plug-in model, though powerful, presents challenges in compatibility, performance, and security. To overcome this, we’ve been working with the web community to help define a next generation browser plug-in API.

We have begun using this API to improve the experience of viewing and interacting with PDF files in Google Chrome. This mirrors our efforts to optimize the Adobe Flash Player experience in Chrome.

Today, we are making available an integrated PDF viewing experience in the Chrome developer channel for Windows and Mac, which can be enabled by visiting chrome://plugins. Linux support is on the way, and we will be enabling the integration by default in the developer channel in the coming weeks.

With this effort, we will accomplish the following:

* PDF files will render as seamlessly as HTML web pages, and basic interactions will be no different than the same interactions with web pages (for example, zooming and searching will work as users expect). PDF rendering quality is still a work in progress, and we will improve it substantially before releasing it to the beta and stable channels.

* To further protect users, PDF functionality will be contained within the security “sandbox” Chrome uses for web page rendering.

* Users will automatically receive the latest version of Chrome’s PDF support; they won’t have to worry about manually updating any plug-ins or programs.

Currently, we do not support 100% of the advanced PDF features found in Adobe Reader, such as certain types of embedded media. However, for those users who rely on advanced features, we plan to give them the ability to launch Adobe Reader separately.

We would also like to work with the Adobe Reader team to bring the full PDF feature set to Chrome using the same next generation browser plug-in API.

We’re excited about the usability and security improvements this will bring to Chrome users, and we’ll continue to keep everyone updated on our efforts through this blog.

Raffi Krikorian, a technical lead on the Twitter Platform Team, explained in a Google Groups posting that the t.co system will always format links to 20 characters.

Additionally, as we mentioned at our Chirp developer conference in April, if you want to share a link through Twitter, there currently isn’t a way to automatically shorten it and we want to fix this. It should be easy for people to share shortened links from the Tweet box on Twitter.com.

To meet both of these goals, we’re taking small steps to expand the link service currently available in Direct Messages to links shared through all Tweets. We’re testing this link service now with a few Twitter employee accounts.

This change will is specially made for mobile users. In addition to a better user experience and increased safety, routing links through this service will eventually contribute to the metrics behind our Promoted Tweets platform and provide an important quality signal for our Resonance algorithm—the way we determine if a Tweet is relevant and interesting to users. We are also looking to provide services that make use of this data, an example would be analytics within our eventual commercial accounts service.

“When asked about the Chrome vs. Android debate, Mr. Pichai said that providing open source platforms will allow the market to make the best determination about what operating system will work best in the mass market,” TheChromeSource reported.

Announced in November 2009, Chrome OS was designed to be an ultrathin OS, designed with just enough code to push a user online, where the Chrome Web browser could take over. In the meantime, however, Google’s more full-featured Android OS has also fared well, proving to be a popular mobile OS for smartphones and other connected devices.

Google representatives could not be reached for comment by press time.

No specific pricing or even timeline was announced, but the release notes of version 2.0.0 (to the right) say this feature will be free only “until at least the end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee.”

All of this became possible only after Apple changed its iPhone SDK in anticipation of the iPad.

Skype pronouced on Feb 3 that 3G calling would happen “soon.” But the additional cost was not trumpeted and does comes as a surprise, though perhaps not a terribly big one given the revenue possibilities and the additional strain on AT&T’s already-vilified 3G network.

Skype calls are generally free or at least much less expensive than those made on minute-counting calling plans. But wireless minutes have become largely commoditized and, from most wireless carriers, available in unlimited plans that eliminate the traditional profit center that used to be overages.

Skype’s migration from the desktop on to mobile devices has created the potential for a dramatic shift in calling behavior. We aren’t quite there yet. But when you can receive calls from an VoIP provider like Skype on a portable device in either an WiFi or 3G network it almost completely blurs the line between an interesting alternative to a telephone and the very definition of a telephone.

Taking that one small step further: In a world with ubiquitous broadband, internet telephony with push notifications and location awareness could make traditional telco and wireless services irrelevant, even for the equivalent of enhanced 911, where the automatically operator knows where you are.

There are still some pieces missing to this puzzle, but the availability of VoIP under 3G — also true of Fring and for international calls on some Android-powered handsets provided by Verizon — is a big step forward.

And, one last thing: iPhone OS 4, expected in weeks, will enable non-core apps like Skype to operate in the background. Which means that you could be online with the internet telephony service all the time on any 3G enabled device like the iPhone and some models of the iPad.

If you’re an early adopter experiencing connectivity issues there are a few things you can do to until Apple comes up with a more definitive explanation and fix for this problem:

* Update Your Router’s Firmware. Before attempting to connect an iPad to a home network, make sure that you have the latest version of the firmware to ensure that the router is functioning at full capability. This is usually done within the router’s included software.

* Change The Router’s Location. Do you have your router positioned in close proximity to equipment that could be causing interference? Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, wireless keyboards, and Bluetooth devices can muddy a W-Fi signal.

* Set Your Router To Operate On One 802.11 Standard. Most current routers support not only 802.11n, but a, b, and g as well. Set your router to operate exclusively on the greatest standard available, and do the same with the wireless devices on your network. The iPad ships with support for 802.11n, so you should have your router match that if possible.

* Change Your Router’s Security Encryption. Typically, security isn’t something that should be experimented with, but when attempting to boost network performance, it may be necessary. There’s no question that WPA and WPA2 encryption is more secure than WEP, but the jury’s still out about which encryption method can slow a network down more (some believe it’s WEP and others WPA). If you have either currently deployed in your home network, try changing to a different encryption setting and see if that makes any difference in your connectivity. Apple also recommends that you use the same security settings across the entire network.

* Rename Your Networks. Apple makes the somewhat odd suggestion that users rename their networks. “Create separate Wi-Fi network names to identify each band. This can be done easily by appending one or more characters to the current network name. Example: Add a G to the 802.11b/g network name and an N to the 802.11n network name.”

1. Keep your private information private. Posting publicly on the Web means that whatever you post is visible to all of your followers. It shows up on your public Google profile and may appear in Google search results.

2. Know who’s following you. Buzz sends a notification after someone starts following you and you can chose to block them. If you block someone Buzz doesn’t send them a message so they won’t necessarily know they’ve been blocked.

3. Control your Google profile. Before you can post on Buzz, you have to set up a public profile, but you don’t have to share anything more than your first and last name on the profile. The video reminds you that if you have a photo associated with your Gmail account, “you can chose to use this use this as your profile photo as well” but you can change or remove the photo if you don’t want it to be public. You can also elect whether you want your list of followers to show up publicly on your profile.

4. Manage posts and comments. Teens are reminded that they can edit and delete their own posts and delete any comments on your posts and you can remove comments you’ve made on other people’s posts.

5. Know how to turn it off. If you no longer want to use Buzz, you can disable it from Gmail settings. You can also hide Buzz in Gmail but still get it on your phone.

It was big news yesterday for Noam Lovinsky, CEO and Co-founder of Episodic, with the announcement that his company has been acquired by Google. Following a day of April Fool’s Day jokes, that included Brightcove had acquired Ooyala – this deal is no joke, and was actually being signed yesterday. This is Google’s eighth acquisition since September, and eleventh acquisition in nine months. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed and Google has released a generic statement saying they are impressed by the Episodic team and share the same vision for video (Though sources tell us it was $25M).

The San Francisco, California-based online video platform (O.V.P) has been around for two years but had kept relatively quiet in stealth mode building the platform, officially launching the complete platform only last October. Last year Episodic focused on delivering video to the mobile devices starting with the iPhone and expanded to the BlackBerry, and even Windows Mobile. Now with the official launch as a “comprehensive solution”, Episodic differentiates itself as an all-under-one-roof platform rather than having a network of partners like its competitors in the space. Customers like Showtime Sports and other national cable networks, web publishers and small and medium businesses, use Episodic, for content management, delivery and monetization.

Both companies’ spokespersons declined to divulge any details regarding the terms and conditions of their deal.

Episodic wrote in its official blog posting about the acquisition: “The Episodic team will join Google and continue its work to bring a great video experience to the Web, mobile phones and IPTV devices.”

It also mentioned that the existing customers will not be affected, and that the company will suspend new sign-ups for its service till transition process completes.

So why is Google buying the startup? The two companies aren’t offering specific details (response to “Why is Episodic excited about joining Google?” on the Episodic website: “Episodic and Google share a common vision for video on the Web.”)

But the Episodic team will be joining Google and likely working on YouTube in some way. Google says it was “impressed by the Episodic team, the vision they have for Internet video, and the progress they have made in bringing a great video experience to the web” and says “Episodic has a deep understanding of the requirements of media publishers, marketers, and enterprises that create their own video-enabled sites and experiences.”

No financial terms of the deal were released. Episodic had raised about $2.5 million in funding and said back in October that it was looking to raise more.

Gates and Allen contacted Dr Roberts after seeing the machine on the front cover of a magazine and offered to write software for it.

When Roberts developed his Altair 8800 the following year, it became the first commercially-successful personal computer kit, retailing at $397. At first the project seemed ill-starred: having promised Popular Electronics a prototype to meet the magazine’s copy deadline, Roberts shipped the machine to New York, only for it to be lost in transit.

Once launched, the machine – named Altair after the 12th brightest star in the sky – became another instant hit, with MITS shipping more than 5,000 kits in seven months. By 1976 sales totalled $6 million. But competitors had already started selling imitations, and the following year Roberts sold his company, pocketed $2 million and moved to rural Georgia, becoming a gentleman farmer and starting a software company.

Later he was able to fulfil his boyhood ambition of becoming a doctor, and set up a practice in the small town of Cochran in 1988.

The program was known as Altair-Basic, the foundation of Microsoft’s business.

“Ed was willing to take a chance on us – two young guys interested in computers long before they were commonplace – and we have always been grateful to him,” the Microsoft founders said in a statement.

“The day our first untested software worked on his Altair was the start of a lot of great things.”

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told technology website CNET that Dr Roberts had taken ” a critically important step that led to everything we have today”.

‘Fond memories’

Dr Roberts was the founder of Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), originally set up to sell electronics kits to model rocket hobbyists.

The company went on to sell electronic calculator kits, but was soon overshadowed by bigger firms.

In the mid-1970′s, with the firm struggling with debt, Dr Roberts began to develop a computer kit for hobbyists.

The result was the Altair 8800, a machine operated by switches and with no display.

It took its name from the then-cutting edge Intel 8080 microprocessor.

The $395 kit (around £1,000 today) was featured on the cover of Popular Electronics in 1975, prompting a flurry of orders. It was also sold assembled for an additional $100 charge.

Amongst those interested in the machine were Paul Allen and Bill Gates.

The pair contacted Dr Roberts, offering to write software code that would help people program the machine.

The pair eventually moved to Albuquerque – the home of MITS – where they founded Micro-Soft, as it was then known, to develop their software: a variant of the Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code (Basic).

“We will always have many fond memories of working with Ed in Albuquerque, in the MITS office right on Route 66 – where so many exciting things happened that none of us could have imagined back then,” the pair said.

Dr Roberts sold his company in 1977.

He died in hospital on 1 April after a long bout of pneumonia.

Facebook reached an important milestone for the week ending March 13, 2010 and surpassed Google in the US to become the most visited website for the week.

This when compared to last year’s mere 2% of US web traffic, is a massive growth to the current 7%. This data has been released by Hitwise and we can make sure of this research, once other online firms release their reports on this incident.

For the first time in the US, the popular social networking site Facebook has surpassed the most popular seach engine Google. It was for the first time Facebook has transcended in peak traffic for such long a period of time.

For the entire week people caught up more on the interaction with pals on Facebook than on Google, however the margin between the two was very thin.According to Experian Hitwise, a company that measures online traffic, published by the Financial Times, for the week ending March 13, visits to Facebook.com accounted for 7.07 percent of all Internet traffic in the United States leading ahead of google that followed it with 7.03 percent.

In 2007 Google launched its new product called Google Gears. Google Gears makes it easy to browse the Internet, or sites you have already visited so you can visit them again using an amazing cache technology.

Here I will explain you what is google gears is doing. When we open our worpdpress admin, wordpress will download common images, JavaScript libraries and CSS files.

If we use the google gears then WordPress will store all these ’static’ files on your hard drive and will not download them from the web server. Means each time you are opening the WordPress admin panel that time wordpress will not download the common images and css and javascript. Thus, it should speed up things especially if you are on a slow connection.

On 5th Feb we got news about release of Rails 3.0 beta. We all developers are really waiting for that day. We checked the new version of Rails but what is more interesting.

The interesting part is what is new in Rails 3.0. So many developers contributed in Rails 3.0. They really worked and planned so hard.

Here I am making list what Rails 3.0  has, means new features:

• Brand new router with an emphasis on RESTful declarations
• New Action Mailer API modelled after Action Controller (now without the agonizing pain of sending multipart messages!)
• New Active Record chainable query language built on top of relational algebra
• Unobtrusive JavaScript helpers with drivers for Prototype, jQuery, and more coming (end of inline JS)

Now I am started working on Rails 3.0 and I am searching for the issues with Rails 3.0 because Rails 3.0 is in Beta so all ROR developer need to come up with issues of Rails 3.0 and try to fix that or submit that issue to community.

Biggest growth of jobs is WordPress. I am wordpress developer and  I can feel this trend today.

I worked on all the  cms like wordpress, drupal, joomla and many more. But in this year I worked on wordpress for quite some extra time.

When we choose CMS we consider following points.

1. Which CMS will provide you Best Seo options

Ans: When we see and check the all CMS then I can easily say that wordpress has ability to provide you best seo option. After that I will must say Drupal is best option to go with. This will also provide you best seo option.

2. Which CMS is easy to make custom theme from custom design PSD

Ans: I can say with wordpress and drupal both creating a theme is very easy. any web developer who have very basic knowledge of PHP they can develp custom theme very easily.

3. Which CMS is easy  for developer to make custom plugins, modules and components easily

Ans: If you started learning API’s of both the CMS. All are good and easy and all provided good amount of help on internet. But I can rate myself as follows:

a. WordPress

b. Drupal

c. Joomla

Anyways that is depending on your knowledge and understanding. All you need to spend some time to understand the API’s of all CMS.

4. Which CMS admin is most user  friendly and easy to use for non-technical people

Ans: For this point I must say wordpress is the best tool. Drupal has admin panel but little complex to understand and same with joomla.

5. Which CMS is most good for  E-commerce site, Blog, Small site, News sites and company website.

Ans:  I recommend again wordpress here. you can setup wordpress very easily and quickly with minium effort. For big websites like magazine and news sites wordpress is the great tool.

Next point is,  for ecommerce and blogging wordpress is the great tool. If you are aware with wordpress then go with drupal.

Conclusion:  If you want to develop very complex website with multiple features like ad management, forums, client support, video gallery, media gallery then go with Drupal.

So many very big websites are built in Drupal and WordPress. Choosing the CMS is all depending on your client requirement.
