According to Marketing Charts and data from Hitwise, these were the top 10 social networking websites and forums during the month of May, 2010.

1. Facebook: 54.90%. Are we really surprised to see that Facebook is the Numero Uno social website? Probably not. With over 500 million members and still growing by leaps and bounds, Facebook is incredibly popular. Make no mistake about it—Facebook appeals to younger members, but there is also a large demographic of older members, as well.

4. Twitter: 1.07%. Really? Can this be true? One would think that considering the tremendous popularity of tweeting and Twitter, it would have commanded a heftier percentage of the market share, but apparently not. Who knew?

6. Yahoo! Answers: 0.91%. You might no think of this as a social community, but it is certainly a community with a large member base. Now that Google Voice is open to everybody in the U.S., small business owners, particularly those with less than 25 employees, should take a close look at Google’s free phone management service. Here are ten good reasons why:

1) Be local, even when you're not: When setting up Google Voice, you have the option of selecting a phone number with the area code of your choice. So what's the small business benefit? Let's say you run a catering service that's based in San Jose, CA (408 area code), and you'd like to attract customers in nearby San Francisco (415 area code). By choosing a 415 number and making it the public contact number for your business–at least in your San Francisco-based ads, anyway–you may lure more customers from SF. (I'm assuming you'd also have a 408 number for your San Jose clientele.) Some industries benefit from a local presence.

2) Phone number for life: If your business moves (perhaps to cheaper digs outside the city), your Google Voice number stays with you. And if you switch to a new office phone provider or wireless carrier, your customers won't lose your number. Since you can configure your Google Voice number to ring one of more other phones, such as a work, home, or cell number, it's less likely that you'll miss important business calls too.

3) Easy voice conferencing: Nobody likes to enter a lengthy pass code and other digit strings to enter a conference call. Google Voice has a simpler approach: Participants ring your Google Voice number; as each call comes in, you follow the prompts to connect them to the conference.

4) Cheap international calls: Have a lot of overseas customers? Google Voice rates are dirt cheap–2 cents per minute to China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, the UK, and a bunch of other places. Google Voice is now available for everyone (provided you have a U.S. phone number).

The service, which started life out as GrandCentral, acts as a unified phone number. It can be used to make free calls to the U.S. and Canada, to send free text messages and more. Its voicemail system can even be.

Now, after more than fifteen months of testing with invite-only accounts, Google Voice is ready for the masses.

As great as the service is, it hasn’t existed without controversy. Last summer, Apple was criticized when the company barred the Google Voice iPhone app from its App Store. The battle over Google Voice was arguably the first shot in the current Apple-Google war.

And earlier today, Business Week reported that Frontier Communications is suing Google over alleged patent violations within the Google Voice service.

For many users however, Google Voice is a wonderful solution to the increasingly complex web of communication profiles. Instead of having to try to maintain separate phone numbers, users can just have one central number forwarded to different devices based on time of day or location.

When Google’s Chrome OS arrives later this year, Dell could be ready to jump on board, according to a report.

Dell’s Amit Midha, president for greater China and South Asia, said the PC company “wants to be one of the leaders” when it comes to adopting new technologies like Google’s Android and Chrome operating systems, according to Reuters on Monday. Dell’s interest in Android is old news, but it has to this point only played around with Chrome OS, stopping short of announcing plans to release a product based on the software.

Midha didn’t exactly announce such plans with his comments, of course, but his words are the strongest suggestion yet that Dell would like to build a Chrome OS Netbook. The company is not listed among the official Chrome OS supporters on Google’s Chrome OS pages, which include Dell competitors such as Acer, HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba.

Google has said Chrome OS Netbooks are supposed to be out by the end of the year. The company has also said it plans to use the devices internally, and it will be interesting to see which hardware vendor gets the Google contract.

Millions of web users rely on PDF files every day to consume a wide variety of text and media content. To enable this, a number of plug-ins exist today which allow users to open PDF files inside their browsers.

As we’ve previously mentioned, the traditional browser plug-in model, though powerful, presents challenges in compatibility, performance, and security. To overcome this, we’ve been working with the web community to help define a next generation browser plug-in API.

We have begun using this API to improve the experience of viewing and interacting with PDF files in Google Chrome. This mirrors our efforts to optimize the Adobe Flash Player experience in Chrome.

Today, we are making available an integrated PDF viewing experience in the Chrome developer channel for Windows and Mac, which can be enabled by visiting chrome://plugins. Linux support is on the way, and we will be enabling the integration by default in the developer channel in the coming weeks.

With this effort, we will accomplish the following:

* PDF files will render as seamlessly as HTML web pages, and basic interactions will be no different than the same interactions with web pages (for example, zooming and searching will work as users expect). PDF rendering quality is still a work in progress, and we will improve it substantially before releasing it to the beta and stable channels.

* To further protect users, PDF functionality will be contained within the security “sandbox” Chrome uses for web page rendering.

* Users will automatically receive the latest version of Chrome’s PDF support; they won’t have to worry about manually updating any plug-ins or programs.

Currently, we do not support 100% of the advanced PDF features found in Adobe Reader, such as certain types of embedded media. However, for those users who rely on advanced features, we plan to give them the ability to launch Adobe Reader separately.

We would also like to work with the Adobe Reader team to bring the full PDF feature set to Chrome using the same next generation browser plug-in API.

We’re excited about the usability and security improvements this will bring to Chrome users, and we’ll continue to keep everyone updated on our efforts through this blog.

Twitter is routing links within Direct Messages through our link service to detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of malware, phishing, and other dangers. Any link shared in a Direct Message has been wrapped with a twt.tl URL. Links reported to us as malicious are blacklisted, and we present users with a page that warns them of potentially malicious content if they click blacklisted links. Twitter want users to have this benefit on all tweets.

Raffi Krikorian, a technical lead on the Twitter Platform Team, explained in a Google Groups posting that the t.co system will always format links to 20 characters.

Additionally, as we mentioned at our Chirp developer conference in April, if you want to share a link through Twitter, there currently isn’t a way to automatically shorten it and we want to fix this. It should be easy for people to share shortened links from the Tweet box on Twitter.com.

To meet both of these goals, we’re taking small steps to expand the link service currently available in Direct Messages to links shared through all Tweets. We’re testing this link service now with a few Twitter employee accounts.

This change will is specially made for mobile users. In addition to a better user experience and increased safety, routing links through this service will eventually contribute to the metrics behind our Promoted Tweets platform and provide an important quality signal for our Resonance algorithm—the way we determine if a Tweet is relevant and interesting to users. We are also looking to provide services that make use of this data, an example would be analytics within our eventual commercial accounts service.

Announced in November 2009, Chrome OS was designed to be an ultrathin OS, designed with just enough code to push a user online, where the Chrome Web browser could take over. In the meantime, however, Google’s more full-featured Android OS has also fared well, proving to be a popular mobile OS for smartphones and other connected devices.
